Oppose Proposed Changes to Federal Grantees, Harming Nonprofits and Communities (National Council of Nonprofits) [Ed. I signed.]

The National Council of Nonprofits and Legal Defense Fund invite organizations nationwide to sign onto a national letter opposing proposed changes to federal grantees that would harm nonprofits and communities. … The General Services Administration (GSA) has proposed requiring all federal grantees, including nonprofits, state, local, and Tribal government, and other entities, to sign new certifications under the threat of civil and criminal penalties before applying for or receiving federal resources, including grants, cooperative agreements, and other assistance. These certifications attempt to align with President Trump’s executive order and the U.S. Department of Justice guidance misrepresenting “illegal” diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, undocumented immigration, and terrorism. … Sign onto a national letter opposing the proposed changes by filling out the form below by March 30! Read the full letter here.

LFNP has also published on its blog a few follow-up articles on this underappreciated issue. The public support tests and public charity classification will become increasingly important for public charities who relied on federal funding not only for funds but also for their attribution to public support; loss of such funds may cause some of these public charities to “tip” into private foundation status. This is an issue some public charities that have already lost federal funding should address with their accountants and lawyers now.]

Significant Events:

  • How Trump and His Advisers Miscalculated Iran’s Response to War In the lead-up to the U.S.-Israeli attack, President Trump downplayed the risks to the energy markets as a short-term concern that should not overshadow the mission to decapitate the Iranian regime.” NY Times
  • “The Politico Poll: The reviews are in. It’s not looking good, America. Allies are giving the U.S. one-star and two-star ratings on its efforts to protect democracy and dependability in a crisis.” Politico
  • “The job market is weakening, inflation is still too high, and we’re at serious risk of a once-in-50-years oil shock. This is almost the exact set of conditions that triggered the stagflation of the 1970s, which at the time was America’s worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. At the moment, the economy is still far from that kind of doomsday scenario, but the direction of travel is disquieting. The economy’s warning lights might not yet be flashing red, but they are certainly flashing yellow.” Atlantic
