Well, here we are again. Another February 15th and another blawgiversary for DennisKennedy.Blog. It’s hard to believe it’s been twenty-two years. since I wrote that first bold and triumphant announcement, echoing Babylon 5: “And so it begins . . .” I genuinely thought I was late to the blogging party back in 2003. Turns out, I was just early for a very, very long party.
And, yes, as long-time readers know, this blog’s birthday always seems to overshadow my own (February 17th – feel free to send virtual cake and presents). This blog can be demanding in the attention it requires from me, especially when it comes to getting its annual recognition. Yes, we had to have an extended discussion about how my blog should have been the co-recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award I received at the American Legal Technology Awards. I did have to admit that most of the things I have done connected with that award did evolve out of this blog.
This year, the main feeling I have is gratitude. Thank you. Thank you to every single person who has read a post, left a comment, sent an email, or even just stumbled across this little corner of the internet. You’ve made this journey worthwhile. You’ve challenged me, supported me, and occasionally, gently corrected me. I’ve learned from writing this blog and from you.
I spent some time this week looking back, wistfully, and maybe even a bit mistfully, through the old blawgiversary posts. This blog’s teenage years were, well, interesting. The negotiations over tattoos and cars were certainly memorable. Now, at 22, the blog seems a bit more settled, a bit more mature. We’re finding a new rhythm, a new balance between the blog, the podcast, and all the other things that pull at my time, especially AI these days. And I still anthropomorphize my blog much more than I will ever anthropomorphize AIs. So be it.
My original post, way back on February 15, 2003, talked of the then-new concept of blogs. I was even more excited about RSS feeds, and producing my own. A blog, for me, was the tool for delivering a feed. It turned into so much more. I still love the idea of feeds and am experimenting at the intersection of feeds and AI.
This blog has always been about exploring ideas – legal technology, innovation, productivity, Personal Quarterly Offsites, collaboration, big ideas, and whatever else caught my fancy. And those ideas have evolved, just like the technology itself. It seems fitting that the blog’s and my birthday are so close together. The blog was a birthday present to myself in 2003.
And speaking of evolving technology, I’m particularly interested in seeing how the rise of AI as a platform will change the way we share and consume information. What will the “blog equivalents” be in this new AI-powered world? What might blogging look like on AI platforms? I’m looking forward to trying to answer those kinds of questions in the coming year.
So, thank you again. Here’s to another year of exploring, learning, and musing together. A big thank you to all the old readers. And, as I like to say every year, welcome, especially, to the new readers. Let’s see what the next year brings.
To paraphrase Bil Taylor’s great question, “Are we learning as fast as the world is changing?”
