States Begin To Regulate AI in Absence of Federal Legislation

Here is the teaser about this Client Update: “Since the European Union seized the early global lead in regulating artificial intelligence, the U.S. Congress has made noise about the need for federal AI legislation, but progress has been slow. The absence of a similarly comprehensive federal law from Congress has created a vacuum that is now being filled by individual states.

These events are unfolding in a familiar pattern, reminiscent of what happened following the E.U. enactment of the General Data Protection Regulation. While the GDPR became an international standard, the federal government failed to adopt a nationwide privacy law, and states like California took the initiative to pass their own privacy laws.

This Update summarizes recent U.S. state efforts by Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Tennessee, and California to enact AI legislation.”
