Most lawyers believe the challenge is getting found online.

It is not.

The real challenge is what happens after someone finds you. Do they trust you enough to take the next step, reach out, and ultimately hire you? That is where most opportunities are either won or lost.

In my conversation with Megan Hargroder, we dug into what actually drives that decision. It is not clever tactics or chasing the latest marketing trend. It comes down to something much more fundamental.

Trust.

And as Megan put it in a way that really sticks, Google only loves you when everyone else loves you first.

Trust Is What Drives Visibility and Conversion

Lawyers are still approaching marketing like a checklist. Run some SEO, test some ads, post on LinkedIn, maybe shoot a few videos. It feels productive, but it often lacks direction.

What Megan made clear is that search engines and AI platforms are no longer rewarding activity. They are rewarding engagement. They are looking at whether real people are interacting with your content, spending time on your website, and finding value in what you are putting out.

That means the goal is not to outsmart the algorithm. The goal is to earn trust from your audience. When people engage with you because they find you helpful, relevant, and credible, the platforms take notice.

The lawyers who understand this shift are the ones who are gaining traction. The ones who do not are left wondering why nothing is working.

Your Online Presence Is Your First Impression

Before a prospect ever speaks with you, they are doing their own research. They are reviewing your website, your LinkedIn profile, your content, and your reviews. By the time they reach out, they have already formed an opinion.

The question they are asking is simple. Can I trust this person?

That trust is built when you clearly show that you understand their problem, that you have successfully handled similar situations, and that you genuinely care about helping them solve it.

Too many lawyers make the mistake of focusing their messaging on themselves. Their credentials, their awards, their experience. While those things matter, they are not what creates connection.

The firms that win flip the script. They focus on the client first, then position themselves as the guide who can help.

Content Works When It Feels Human

There is more content online than ever before, and most of it blends together. It is polished, safe, and often forgettable.

What stands out is content that feels real.

Megan emphasized that connection is what builds trust, and connection comes from authenticity. That means speaking in a way people understand, sharing insights from real experience, and allowing your personality to come through.

This is where many lawyers hesitate. They worry about sounding too casual or not appearing professional enough. But the reality is that people hire lawyers they feel comfortable with.

When your content sounds like you, not like a textbook, you create familiarity. And familiarity builds trust long before a first meeting ever happens.

Specificity Builds Authority Faster Than Volume

One of the biggest mistakes lawyers make is trying to cover too much ground. They talk about multiple practice areas, different types of clients, and a wide range of services.

The result is confusion.

The lawyers who grow faster are the ones who are clear about what they do and who they help. They focus on a specific audience and consistently reinforce that message.

This repetition is not a weakness. It is what makes you memorable.

When someone hears the same clear message over and over again, they begin to associate you with that specific need. That is how authority is built.

And authority, over time, turns into trust.

Your Story Is Your Advantage

Most lawyer bios read the same. A list of schools, firms, and accomplishments followed by a short personal note.

That does not create connection.

Your story is one of the most powerful tools you have to build trust. Why you chose your practice area, what experiences shaped your perspective, and what motivates you to help your clients all matter more than you think.

When people see themselves in your story, they feel understood. And when they feel understood, they are far more likely to trust you.

That trust shortens the distance between interest and engagement.

The Biggest Mistake Megan Hargroder Made

Megan shared a mistake that many business owners can relate to. She stepped away from her business at a time when it still needed her leadership.

The business continued to operate, but it lost momentum. Growth slowed, and opportunities were missed.

The lesson is straightforward. Systems are important, but timing is everything. There are moments in a business where your presence, your relationships, and your visibility matter more than anything else.

Recognizing those moments is critical.

When you are in a growth phase, you cannot afford to step too far away from what is driving that growth.

Closing Thoughts

Marketing is not about doing more. It is about doing what works.

And what works today is trust.

The lawyers who focus on building real connection, clear messaging, and consistent visibility are the ones who are seeing results. Not because they are louder, but because they are more credible.

At the end of the day, people are not hiring the lawyer with the most content.

They are hiring the lawyer they trust.
