By Steve Fretzin & Danny Decker
Most lawyers approach marketing the same way they approach their work. They focus on the details, the process, and the technical expertise that makes them good at what they do.
The problem is that clients do not care about any of that.
In my conversation with Danny Decker, cofounder of Spotlight Marketing and Branding, we dug into a fundamental shift that too many lawyers still resist. Your marketing is not about you. It is about your client.
And the lawyers who understand that are the ones who stand out, get remembered, and ultimately get hired.
Stop Making Yourself The Hero
Lawyers are trained to showcase their credentials. Where they went to school, the awards they have won, the cases they have handled.
That might impress other lawyers, but it does very little for a potential client who is stressed, overwhelmed, and looking for help.
Danny reinforced a powerful concept that changes everything. Your client is the hero of the story. You are the guide.
That means your messaging should focus on what your client is going through, how it feels, and what life looks like after the problem is solved. When you shift from talking about yourself to talking about them, trust builds much faster.
The lawyers who win are the ones who make clients feel understood, not intimidated.
Your Clients Are Already Telling You What To Say
One of the biggest missed opportunities in legal marketing is ignoring the questions clients ask every single day.
Every consultation comes with a pattern. The same concerns. The same fears. The same questions about cost, timing, outcomes, and risk.
That is not random. That is your content strategy.
Danny made it clear that the smartest lawyers turn those questions into blogs, videos, and posts. Not generic content, but direct answers to real problems.
When you do that consistently, two things happen. First, you build credibility with potential clients who see that you understand their situation. Second, you position yourself to be found, not just on Google, but on AI platforms where people are now searching for answers.
Visibility today is not about guessing what to say. It is about listening to what your clients are already asking.
AI Is Changing How Clients Find You
There is a major shift happening right now that lawyers cannot afford to ignore.
People are no longer just searching on Google. They are asking platforms like ChatGPT to recommend lawyers, explain legal issues, and guide their decisions.
That changes the game.
Danny shared that law firms are already getting clients directly from AI recommendations. The firms that show up are the ones with clear, relevant, and helpful content that answers real questions.
This is not about gaming the system. It is about clarity.
If your website clearly explains what you do, who you help, what problems you solve, and even gives some level of guidance on cost and expectations, you are far more likely to be surfaced in these AI driven results.
The firms that adapt early will have a significant advantage.
Authenticity Is The Differentiator
There is no shortage of lawyers posting content, but much of it feels the same.
Polished. Safe. Forgettable.
Danny and I both see the same thing. The lawyers who stand out are the ones willing to be real.
That does not mean being unprofessional. It means being human. Sharing your perspective, your values, and your personality in a way that connects with the right audience.
The goal is not to attract everyone. The goal is to attract the right people.
When you show up authentically, you naturally draw in clients who align with how you think and how you work. At the same time, you filter out the ones who are not a good fit.
That is not a downside. That is the strategy.
The Biggest Mistake Danny Decker Made
Danny shared a mistake that many lawyers can learn from.
He built a system that generated leads at a high level, but the clients were not prepared to handle them.
There was no intake system. No follow up process. No structure to convert interest into business.
The result was predictable. Leads came in, but they did not turn into clients.
This is where many lawyers get it wrong. They focus on getting more opportunities without building the systems to handle them.
Growth does not come from more leads. It comes from converting the right leads consistently.
And that requires process, discipline, and accountability.
Closing Thoughts
Legal marketing is not about being louder or more impressive than the competition.
It is about being clearer, more relevant, and more human.
When you focus on your client, answer real questions, adapt to how people are searching today, and show up authentically, you create a brand that stands out in a crowded market.
And the lawyers who do that are the ones who get chosen.
